Day 1 Arrive in Umbria and check in to the hotel near Orvieto for 2 nights, half board.
Day 2 After breakfast, depart for an excursion to the Cittá della Pieve and Orvieto. On a rise of 508 m, Cittá della Pieve is one of the most historically important centres in Umbria. Its cultural riches and medieval character mean this city is definitely worth a closer look. Arrive in Orvieto around lunchtime, where a wine tasting and sampling of local products is planned among the picturesque underground caves. Afterwards, take a guided tour of the old Etruscan city of Orvieto, built on tufa and full of towers and medeival palazzos. The Cathedral, Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo Soliano and the Pozzo di San Patrizio are all definitely worth visiting.
Day 3 After breakfast, depart for Lazio to Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe; the road along its edge offers beautiful views. Proceed on to Civita di Bagnoregio, “the dying town”; it is a city carved into the top of a hillside which is slowly crumbling away. Only the town core remains, and it is only reachable by footbridge! The last stop is Montefiascone which presides majestically over the surrounding countryside; its historical centre covers the steep hillside, with the grand dome of the cathedral at the top. After the visit, we will taste the famous white wine Est! Est!! Est!! Then, check in to the hotel near Viterbo for 2 nights, half board.
Day 4 After breakfast, depart for an excursion to Caprarola, perched atop an outcropping of tufa. While immersed in the ancient Etruscan region, Caprarola has its roots in the 11th century. Sights include the Palazzo Farnese, one of the most important examples of mannerist-renaissance architecture. You continue on to Viterbo, hugging the edge of Lake Vico, a nature lovers dream.
Day 5 After breakfast, depart for return trip home.
