Despite being a modern city and one of the most important world economics centres, the capital of the Lombardy region is rich in magnificent arts treasures which serve to document the historical importance of the city. The most ancient buildings, such as the columns of the church San Lorenzo, date back to Roman times. The Dome Square and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with its elegant shops and cafes represent a popular meeting point in Milan. The imposing Dome in Gothic style (works began in the 14th century) is decorated with thousands of marble statues and spires and a golden “Madonnina” stands out at the top. Near the Dome lies the renowned Teatro La Scala. The Sforza Castle, a massive Renaissance residence with large inner yards, hosts several museums. Yet in the last 30 years the history of Milan has been mainly influenced by fashion and renowned worldwide for the fashion designers who work here.
