The town of Arezzo is perched on a gently rolling hill dominated by the Gothic Cathedral and the Medici Fortress.

Set aside from usual tourist routes, Arezzo is well worth a visit. Famous personalities have left their mark in the town such as the poet Francesco Petrarca, Piero della Francesca and his frescoes in the Church of San Francesco, Giorgio Vasari, the great architect who built the Uffizi.

Arezzo is mainly dedicated to handicraft as under the Etruscan and later the Roman rule. At that time Arezzo was famed for the handcrafted ceramics and metal. Today the town is renowned for the production of golden jewellery. The Antique market on Piazza Grande and the surrounding streets is also worth a look. You should not leave without attending the “Giostra del Saracino”, a tournament held on the third Sunday of June and the first Sunday of September: a true medieval competition among the four districts of the town.
