Assisi

The history of Assisi, built against the slopes of Mount Subasio, is closely linked with the Franciscan Order of monks that founded the town. The new art trends from Assisi represented a turning point in Italian art. Indeed, the Franciscan rule of poverty had a strong influence on the development of art in Italy. From the 13th century artists from Rome and Florence worked in Assisi in the Basilica di San Francesco and created a spiritual and emotional representation of beings and nature, the best examples of which are works by Cimabue and Giotto.
